At DGCKids, we’re dedicated to empowering children with visual impairments to thrive as they grow. Our Youth Services are designed for children aged 6 and up, offering a supportive and enriching environment where they can develop essential skills, build friendships, and experience new adventures. We understand that children in this age range are navigating critical stages of their growth, from expanding their independence to building self-confidence, and our programs are here to help them succeed.
Growing Independence and Confidence
The GRADS (Group Recreation and Developmental Support) program is at the heart of our youth services. This program is specially designed to meet the unique needs of school-aged children with visual impairments. Through monthly group meet-ups, special events, and outdoor adventures, GRADS helps children practice orientation and mobility, socialization, and life skills in a fun, engaging environment. Whether navigating new places, trying new activities, or working together with peers, the GRADS program encourages kids to step out of their comfort zones and gain confidence in their abilities.
What We Offer
- Monthly GRADS Meet-Ups: Regularly scheduled group activities that focus on independence, mobility, and social connections.
- Tandem Adventurers: Pairs children (ages 10+) with visual impairments with sighted volunteers for exciting tandem cycling adventures.
- Challenge Trips: Outdoor excursions and trips where kids can practice navigating new environments and build self-reliance.
- Special Events: Fun outings like sports activities and music therapy sessions.
- Skill-Building Activities: Interactive learning experiences that promote self-confidence, teamwork, and life skills.
