Early Intervention Services at DGCKids
We meet children where they are—at home, in childcare, or wherever they need us most—to deliver tailored support. Our team is dedicated to equipping families with the resources and tools to help their children grow, learn, and succeed.
Why Early Intervention Matters
Eighty to ninety percent of learning comes from or is stimulated by vision. For children with visual impairments, understanding the world around them requires direct teaching of concepts that other children learn incidentally. Our program ensures they have every opportunity later in life to live as independently, productively, and fully as possible.
What Services Do We Offer?
Our services are designed to meet each child’s unique needs and are based on your family’s concerns and goals. Here’s what we offer:
- Functional Vision Assessment: This is often the first step. A teacher will visit your child to observe how they use their vision and other senses during daily activities. After the assessment, we’ll provide recommendations and a detailed report to help you better understand your child’s needs.
- Educational Services: Our Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) visit your home, childcare center, or other community locations to help your child use their vision and other senses to explore and learn about the world. They also work closely with you to support your child’s development.
- Orientation and Mobility Services: As your child starts to move and walk, our specialists help them understand their environment and navigate it safely.
- Occupational Therapy: Our occupational therapists focus on helping children with self-care, sensory processing (like sound and touch), and using their hands and fine motor skills for everyday tasks.
- Physical Therapy: Our physical therapists support children as they develop the strength and skills needed for sitting, crawling, standing, and walking. They can also help with positioning equipment if needed.
- Speech and Language Therapy: Our speech therapists work on communication skills, from feeding to helping your child understand and express themselves.
- Low Vision Evaluation: If needed, we can refer your child for an assessment with an optometrist to better understand how they see and what adjustments might help, such as magnification or environmental changes.
