Strong healthy caregiver child relationships are the foundation for the development of critical life skills including self-esteem, confidence, cooperation, conflict resolution emotion regulation, empathy and meaningful interpersonal relationships. When children are diagnosed with a disability, caregivers are greater risk of increased stress, which has the potential of negatively impacting their relationships with their children. Dr. Luby will discuss the difference between a delay in development, the normative variations and extremes of development and a mental health diagnosis that requires intervention. She will explain what to look for, when to be concerned and when and how to refer to specialists.
