DGC GRADS Hit the Slopes

ST. LOUIS — FEBRUARY 15, 2008 — On Saturday, February 2nd the Delta Gamma Center GRADS proved a point once again – that you don’t need good vision to have good times. Twenty youth with visual impairments, ages 7 through 18, were treated to a day of skiing at Hidden Valley. With the assistance of Pam Weber and a group of dedicated volunteers from the Gateway Disabled Ski Program, the financial support of the Lighthouse for the Blind and The Productive Living Board of St. Louis County, and the support of the Center and their volunteers, everyone was able to ski or snowboard.

The adaptations were as different as the children themselves. Some held on to a bamboo pole that was also held by the volunteers skiing at their sides, some used sit skis, some just needed a little guidance to keep them safe. The can do attitude of our GRADS was evident throughout the day. At the end of the day, the GRADS went home with the memory of a great time, a boost in their self-confidence, and another activity on the list of possibilities for them to pursue.
