The Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments Presents:Spring 2007 Saturday SeminarsAll Seminars will be held at: St. Louis Society for the Blind It's Time To EatPresenter: Patricia Miller, MS OTR, Hand to Hand Pediatric Therapy Designed to address a multidimensional approach to working with young children with feeding difficulties, this presentation will provide a brief overview of pediatric feeding concerns from both medical and behavioral perspectives. The effect of sensory issues, behavior, genetics, positioning, and muscle tone on feeding will be presented as the basis for determining the most effective approach for assessment and intervention. Patricia Miller, MS OTR. Patricia (Trish) Miller has a master's degree in Occupation Therapy from Washington University School of Medicine. Trish has been working with pediatrics in the metro area for almost 10 years and opened Hand to Hand Pediatric Therapy in 2000. She is an Illinois Early Intervention state evaluator, provides direct services to children birth — three, and contracts with school districts in Illinois. Trish has presented to a variety of organizations, was guest lecture at SIU-E, and taught pediatrics at Lewis & Clark's OTA program. Her areas of specialized training include Neuro-developmental techniques, sensory integration, assistive technology/seating, and feeding. Social Development in Children with and without Visual ImpairmentsPresenter: John N. Constantino, M.D., Washington University School of Medicine The rising incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has led to an increase in social impairments in children. In this presentation participants, will learn about social concerns related to ASD including social awareness, social information processing, social communication, social anxiety/avoidance and autistic traits. Diagnostic tools to identify ASD in young children and effective treatment practices will be discussed as well as new research on the prevalence of ASD in children with visual impairments. John N. Constantino, M.D. Child Psychiatrist, is a widely renowned researcher in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders. He is the author of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), a rating scale which measures the severity of autism spectrum conditions as they occur in natural social settings. Dr. Constantino has many clinical and research interests in disorders of social development and autism in children. He was listed in Best Doctors in America (2002-2005) and currently holds a gubernational appointment to the Mental Health Commission for the State of Missouri. The Premature InfantPresenter: F. Sessions Cole, M.D., Washington University School of Medicine The growing number of premature infants entering the Early Intervention system has prompted a need to learn more about current research and the implications for early intervention providers. Dr. Cole will be presenting information on special health care concerns, neonatal course, early development, and new medical developments pertaining to prematurity, including Retinopathy of Prematurity, an eye condition related to severe prematurity. F. Sessions Cole, M.D. was recently appointed Assistant Vice Chancellor for children's health at Washington University School of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at St. Louis Children's Hospital. He also holds the position of Medical Director of Pediatrics for the BJC Health System; Vice Chairman, Department of Pediatrics; Interim Director Division of Allergy and Pulmonary Medicine; and Director Division of Pediatric Newborn Medicine. Dr. Cole is a distinguished physician who is widely known and respected not only for his extraordinary commitment and superior skills, but also for his advocacy for children and families. |
